IWPA 2018 Conference Agenda

8:00-8:30 am Registration and Continental Breakfast

8:30-9:00 am Welcome, Overview & Icebreaker

9:00-10:00 am Morning Keynote: Annise Parker, President & CEO, Victory Fund

Victory Fund and Victory Institute President & CEO Annise Parker is the first former elected official to lead the organizations, having served six years as a Houston City Council member, six years as City Controller, and six years as Mayor of the city. She is one of only two women to have been elected mayor and is the only person in Houston history to have held the offices of council member, controller and mayor. She was the first openly LGBTQ mayor of a major American city. In 2010 Time magazine named Mayor Parker one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

10:00-10:25 am Break/Connect

10:25-10:40 am Buti Yoga with Kristina Clark

“Buti” (pronounced boo-TEE) is a Marathi Indian term for “the cure to something that’s been hidden away or kept secret.” Buti yoga is a trademarked style that combines vinyasa-style yoga, Native American and African tribal dancing, and higher intensity interval training. Kristina will lead us in a brief sequence that can be adapted to fit each of us, no matter our levels of familiarity or fitness. For this type of practice, it’s all about empowerment - that all the validation and acceptance we seek from outside of ourselves, is already within.

10:40-11:35 am Panel: “Put on Your Own Oxygen Mask First: Prioritizing Self Care”

When flying, the routine instructions from the flight attendants instruct us to put on our own oxygen masks first, before assisting others. It’s a basic rule of survival—we must meet our own basic needs if we are to be of any use to others. This is an apt metaphor to bring elsewhere in our lives as we consider the importance of self-care. Taking care of everything and everyone else first puts us at risk of crashing and burning via stress, fatigue, reduced mental effectiveness, health problems, anxiety, frustration, inability to sleep, and more.

Self-care is not a luxury; it is critically important to our survival, particularly as we engage in work around the issues we care about. During this panel discussion we will explore the meaning of self-care and learn from our panelists about their own self-care stories and practices. We will also examine some of the stigmas around self-care and learn about how to address these head-on to ensure that we are cultivating good practices that allow us to be there for ourselves as well as others.

11:35-12:00 pm Table Discussions/Morning Reflections

12:00-1:00 pm Lunch/Connect

1:00-1:10 pm Diamond Sponsors

1:10 –2:40 pm Keynote Workshop:  “Owning Expertise: How Credibility Works and How Ideas Rise” Katie Orenstein, Founder & CEO, The OpEd Project

The OpEd Project seeks to increase the number of women thought leaders contributing to key commentary forums to a tipping point. They envision a world in which the best ideas—regardless of where or whom they come from—will have a chance to be heard and shape society and the world.

In this highly-interactive workshop, we will engage in a large group experiment to explore how credibility works--and works unfairly--in the world. We'll examine the demographics of public discourse and address core questions of thought leadership: what do we know, why does it matter, and how can we maximize our impact? Together we’ll surface hidden beliefs about expertise and power, and explore ways to walk through difficult terrain with integrity. Participants will walk away with bold ideas, a deeper sense of what they know and stand for, and actionable steps for moving forward.

2:40- 3:00 pm Break/Connect

3:00-3:15 pm Walking Reflection: Nickie Lee, City of Topeka

3:15-4:15 pm Panel: “Speaking Your Truth”

Building on this energizing keynote and the “Speak Your Truth” theme of the 2018 conference, this panel will feature women who have added their voices to important public conversations. They participate in an array of modalities—online commentary forums, traditional publications, media interviews, coordinated conversations, and more—and give voice to their own expertise on issues they care about personally and professionally. We’ll hear from them about their choices regarding when and how to engage in public conversations, reinforcing the messages from throughout our day together as we look ahead to maximize the impact of our own expertise.

We very much hope you’ll make plans to stay a while after the conference wraps up! While we build time for connection and reflection into the conference, we know from experience that attendees want time to continue those conversations and connect with others.  We hope you’ll consider arranging your late afternoon responsibilities—if you can—so that you can stay for the reception.
