Big 12 Room, Level 5
Speaker: Darin Atteberry, City Manager, City of Fort Collins, CO
Changing demographics, economic trends, and technology are forcing us to re-think what the role of cities in the 21st Century is. As we move toward a work force comprised of a majority of millennials and resident expectations continue to evolve and demand more than basic service delivery, city governments must be prepared to envision non-traditional roles and strive toward aspirational thinking. Mr. Atteberry will address how local leaders may have an expanding role to help their communities focus on the future to realize aspirational goals.

Water, such a simple word and yet the issues and emotions surrounding it are layered and complex. In Kansas, how you feel about water depends on “where you sit” - west or east of Highway 81, in the Kansas or Arkansas river basin, in an urban or rural area, do you irrigate or not? The perspectives go on and on. So what are the broad public policies that have shaped our view of water in Kansas and how will they shape the economy and quality of life for the future? Hear from two “battle hardened” soldiers in the battle over water and what the future may hold for all of us.

ICMA Practice Groups: 2. Policy Facilitation; 3. Functional and Operational Expertise and Planning; 6. Initiative, Risk Taking, Vision, Creativity,  Innovation and Continuous Improvement; and 13. Strategic Planning
